Autumn Term 2008

Musical Masterpieces & Milestones
10 weeks commencing 30 September 2008: Tutor: David Peacock

We will study a variety of pieces, some well known and others neglected, placing them in their musical, cultural, historical and social contexts and illustrated by audio and video recordings and at the piano.
London Gardens
10 weeks commencing 2 October 2008: Tutor: Katherine Myers

We will follow the gardening fortunes of a prosperous London couple between medieval times and the present. Where would they have lived, and what would their gardens have been like? Spring Term 2009

Brave New Genetics
10 weeks commencing 6 January 2009: Tutor: Brenda Harold

DNA Profiles, GM crops, stem cells, gene tests, designer babies ... genetics is constantly in the headlines. This course will provide a jargon-free introduction to those who wish to understand the basic principles and explore the issues arising from this new science. No scientific background is required.

London in Literature
10 weeks commencing 8 January 2009: Tutor: Michael King

London has inspired writers across the centuries. We will consider how London, and Londoners, have been depicted by a variety of fiction writers, poets and essayists, including native-born Londoners, settlers in the metropolis and visitors. Writings will range in time from medieval London to London at the start of the 21st century.
